Angola has made a game-changing move in global mining with the discovery and accelerated development of niobium and fluorite, two critical minerals essential to the future of clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and high-performance infrastructure.
Niobium is a strategic mineral used to strengthen steel, reduce emissions in construction, and enable next-generation batteries and aerospace technologies. Fluorite, equally vital, underpins everything from lithium-ion batteries and solar panels to semiconductors and green chemicals. Together, they place Angola firmly at the centre of future-facing industrial supply chains.
“Backed by a $200 million investment to date, this niobium project is a clear statement of Angola’s ambition. It positions our country as a rising force in the global critical minerals race, with impact far beyond our borders for Africa and for the world,” said Wilson Ganga, Chief Executive Officer of Niobonga.
The announcement lands as Angola sharpens its global mining presence. A delegation of 13 Angolan companies is participating in the 32nd Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, alongside representatives from the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, the Geological Institute, Endiama, Sodiam, and Catoca. More than 6,000 global mining leaders and policymakers are attending the event, widely regarded as the most important mining conference in the world.
A standout moment is Angola Day, featuring the Angola Mining Business Forum under the theme “Discovering Angola’s Mineral Potential Through Strong Partnerships”. The forum highlights geological opportunity, legislative reform, and investment readiness as Angola accelerates diversification beyond diamonds.
With up to $400 million being mobilised across mining projects and global players such as Ivanhoe Mines, Rio Tinto, and Anglo American active in the country, Angola’s niobium and fluorite breakthrough signals a new era. From Africa to the world, Angola is no longer just mining minerals. It’s mining the future.
