Botswana has marked a double milestone with characteristic ambition, celebrating 60 years of diamond industry leadership whilst unveiling a medal sponsorship for the World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26 that places Botswana-mined and finished natural diamonds at the centre of a global sporting stage.
President Duma Gideon Boko officiated the diamond jubilee celebrations hosted by the Ministry of Minerals and Energy in Gaborone, an event that brought together the country’s long-standing story of mineral governance, socio-economic development and shared national prosperity built on natural diamonds. The jubilee marks six decades of the defining partnership between the Government of Botswana and De Beers, a relationship that has underpinned one of Africa’s most studied development models and coincides with Botswana’s 60th anniversary of independence.
The President also unveiled the medal prototypes for the Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26, medals decorated with natural diamonds mined and finished in Botswana. The sponsorship was facilitated by the Ministry of Minerals and Energy through the state-owned Okavango Diamond Company and the broader diamond industry, reflecting a deliberate alignment between Botswana’s mineral identity and its role as host of a historic global sporting event.
The World Athletics Relays is coming to Africa for the first time in history, with Botswana as the proud host, a moment the government has chosen to anchor in the same diamonds that have shaped the country’s economic trajectory for six decades.
Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Joy Kenewendo and Minister of Sports and Arts Jacob Kelebeng accompanied the President at the unveiling, underscoring the cross-government significance of both milestones. The sponsorship is, in the words of the occasion, testament to the historic interconnection between diamonds and the development of sports and a statement that Botswana’s diamonds are not merely an economic asset but a source of national pride on the world stage.
