Copper Takes the Lead as Botswana Diamonds Rebrands

Botswana’s mining shift toward energy-transition metals gathered pace this week as junior explorer Botswana Diamonds Plc officially rebranded to Botswana Minerals Plc, signalling a decisive pivot from diamonds to copper and battery-linked minerals.

The London AIM and Botswana Stock Exchange-listed company said the name change, effective 27 February 2026, reflects a new strategic direction centred on copper exploration supported by artificial intelligence-driven geological targeting. Over the past year, it secured 11 exploration licences prospective for copper, as well as cobalt and nickel, metals increasingly critical to electrification, renewable energy systems and electric vehicle supply chains.

The repositioning comes at a sensitive time for Botswana’s economy. Diamonds still account for close to 80% of exports and roughly a quarter of GDP, leaving national revenues exposed to fluctuations in global luxury demand. Copper, by contrast, is gaining prominence as a structural growth metal tied to grid expansion, battery storage and industrial decarbonisation.

Botswana Minerals joins a growing cohort of copper-focused explorers in the country including Aterian Plc and Cobre Limited. Current production remains anchored by the Motheo mine operated by Sandfire Resources and Khoemacau, owned by MMG Limited.

While the company has yet to outline a detailed capital development roadmap, the rebrand underscores how exploration narratives in Botswana are broadening beyond diamonds as global capital tracks energy-transition metals.

Alongside the name change, Botswana Minerals unveiled a new corporate identity designed to reflect its technology-led exploration strategy. The company’s Managing Director James AH Campbell revealed, “The logo represents Botswana Minerals’ focus on Al-driven mineral discovery powered by scientific intelligence. At the centre of the logo is an atom-inspired nucleus symbolising scientific analysis and mineral composition, a visual reference to precision detection and data-driven prospecting. Radiating network lines and nodes represent artificial intelligence, geological mapping and data convergence leading to mineral discovery.”

He added that the copper-orange core signifies mineral wealth beneath the surface, referencing both legacy diamond assets and the company’s expanding copper focus. The surrounding blue and black elements draw from Botswana’s national colours, reinforcing stability and responsible development, while a sand-toned base evokes the Kalahari as a frontier for untapped resources.

In conclusion, Campbell credited business partner Boniswa Madlanga and her daughter Buhle Madlanga for conceiving and articulating the logo concept, describing it as emblematic of a modern exploration company where science, technology and national identity converge. As the global energy transition accelerates, Botswana’s junior miners are recalibrating and copper is fast becoming central to the country’s next mining chapter.
