Diamond Value Chain in Focus as Botswana Hosts Romanian Delegation

The Ministry of Minerals and Energy hosted a Romanian delegation as part of ongoing efforts to deepen international investment engagement in Botswana’s diamond industry and broader minerals value chain.

The delegation, led by Botswana’s Ambassador to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Viorel Zaharia, was briefed on the structure and performance of Botswana’s diamond sector, with particular emphasis on the country’s global positioning, governance framework and integrated value chain.

The Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) presented an overview of the country’s diamond operations, highlighting Botswana’s world-class sorting and valuation systems and its long-standing reputation for transparency, precision and integrity within the global rough diamond market.

The visit formed part of a wider investment mission in Botswana, which included engagements beyond the minerals sector. The delegation also explored potential opportunities in tourism-linked infrastructure including proposed developments around Kasane and the Kazungula Bridge corridor, such as a five-star hotel and an international conference centre under consideration by the Botswana Tourism Organisation.

Zaharia expressed strong appreciation for Botswana’s diamond industry, noting its distinct position in the global precious stones market. He highlighted the country’s stability and hospitality, describing Botswana as a second home and indicated his intention to promote Botswana’s diamond story internationally through a documentary initiative.

Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, encouraged the delegation to further deepen its understanding of the sector through site visits to key operations, including Jwaneng Mine, regarded as the world’s richest diamond mine by value, as well as Orapa Mine, which integrates mining operations with wildlife conservation initiatives.

DTCB continues to anchor Botswana’s global reputation as the world’s largest and most advanced rough diamond sorting and valuation hub, reinforcing the country’s position as a leading player in the international diamond industry.
