The glimmer of a new beginning is on the horizon for Botswana’s lone gold operation, Mupane Gold Mine, as it enters a crucial phase of its liquidation. Park Village Auctions and Auction IT have launched a “Request for Offers” for the mine, situated a mere 50km east of Francistown, inviting interested parties to bid for its assets and unlock its potential.
Mupane Gold Mine, which began extracting gold from the famed Mupanipani Hills in 2004, ceased operations in March 2024 after battling persistent financial difficulties. Now, under the careful oversight of liquidators, the mine’s future hinges on a successful sale, with bids due by a firm deadline of Friday, June 13, 2025.
John Taylor of Park Village Auctions, who is spearheading the sale alongside Auction IT, highlighted the significant assets on offer. Prospective buyers will have the opportunity to acquire four key licenses covering both open cast and underground operations, with reported gold grades ranging from approximately 1.05g/ton to a promising 2.38g/ton (measured).
Beyond the untouched reserves, Mupane also presents a compelling opportunity in its existing infrastructure. The sale includes 15.9 million tons of tailings, boasting an average gold grade of circa 0.4g/ton – a valuable resource for modern processing techniques. Furthermore, the mine’s substantial processing facilities are part of the package, featuring a 350tph crushing circuit and a 200tph milling and Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) plant, alongside a complete suite of mine infrastructure.
For those serious about entering the competitive world of gold mining, access to the mine’s comprehensive data room is available upon the signing of a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and payment for both data room access and the essential Request for Offers document. This document, which will guide all bids, is critical for understanding the full scope of the opportunity.
All offer documents must be meticulously prepared and submitted directly to john.taylor@parkvillage.co.za no later than 4 pm on Friday, June 13. The sale of Mupane Gold Mine represents not just a chance to acquire a significant mining asset, but also a potential revitalisation for Botswana’s gold sector and the local communities that depend on it. Industry watchers will be keenly observing this auction, hoping to see a new chapter begin for this once-thriving operation.
