Sandvik to Supply $43M of Equipment to Botswana Copper Mine

Sandvik AB, the Swedish mining equipment giant, has secured a significant order to supply underground machinery for the Khoemacau copper mine in Botswana. The deal, valued at approximately $43 million ($450 million), was placed by JCHX Mining Management Co., a Chinese mining services provider.

The order includes a suite of equipment, such as loaders, trucks, and drills, alongside digital monitoring solutions to enhance operational efficiency. Deliveries are slated to begin in the third quarter of 2025 and continue through the second quarter of 2026.

The equipment will be used as part of a new five-year contract JCHX secured in June for underground mining operations at the Khoemacau mine.

The Khoemacau mine, located in Botswana’s Kalahari Copper Belt, is undergoing an expansion. The mine, which began low-cost operations in 2021 and reached full production by the fourth quarter of 2022, currently produces 43,000 to 53,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate annually.

Expansion studies and drilling suggest a significant production boost, with potential output increasing to 130,000 tonnes of copper and five million ounces of silver per year.

The mine, acquired by MMG Ltd. in March for an undisclosed sum, employs approximately 1,800 people, with 95% of its workforce comprising residents. It is projected to have an operational lifespan of over 20 years.
