Gaborone, Botswana: Botala Energy, an Australian gas exploration company, has secured a crucial mining licence for its Serowe coal bed methane (CBM) project in Botswana, marking a significant step towards commercial production. The licence, granted by the Botswana government, clears the final regulatory hurdle for the ambitious project.
The newly awarded licence, valid for ten years with an option for a 25-year extension, allows Botala to extract natural gas from the Serowe region, an area previously explored under prospecting licences. This development follows meticulous environmental and feasibility assessments, ensuring compliance with Botswana’s stringent regulatory standards.
“The granting of the mining licence is a defining moment for Botala,” stated CEO Kris Martinick, highlighting the project’s transformation from exploration to development. “It removes the final regulatory hurdle and provides us with the green light to transition from exploration to development, bringing us closer to first revenue.”
The Botswana government now holds a 90-day window to exercise its right to acquire a 15% equity stake in the project. Should this option be taken up, Botala stands to receive approximately A$2.2 million. The government will also receive a 3% royalty on the gross market value of the gas produced.
The project’s approval comes at a time of increasing energy demand in Southern Africa. Botala is now accelerating its development activities, which include drilling additional wells, enhancing infrastructure, and completing a bankable feasibility study.
This development signifies a potential boost to Botswana’s energy sector and the wider regional economy. The project’s success hinges on Botala’s ability to efficiently extract and deliver natural gas to meet the growing demand, while adhering to sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.
