LHM Strengthens Botswana’s Mining Sector with Tailored Power Solutions

LH Marthinusen, a prominent division of ACTOM and a global leader in electro-mechanical repair and manufacturing, is nearing the final stages of a significant project involving the manufacture of two 30 MVA transformers for a major mining house in Botswana. This initiative was born from the mining company’s urgent need to overhaul its ageing power infrastructure, which had become insufficient for meeting the demands of expanded production and maintaining operational reliability. As the mine sought to stabilise its high-capacity power supply to support critical operations, it required a solution that could guarantee long-term efficiency and uninterrupted performance in a demanding industrial environment.

The selection of LHM followed a rigorous and competitive tender process where the mining house evaluated potential suppliers based on stringent technical and operational criteria. LHM’s successful bid was a testament to its established reputation for delivering high-performance, bespoke power solutions and its profound understanding of the unique challenges inherent in the mining industry. Beyond technical specifications, the client’s confidence was bolstered by LHM’s commitment to local support, comprehensive after-sales service, and a pricing structure that balanced quality with cost-effectiveness.

Engineered to manage high-voltage demands with exceptional reliability, these 30 MVA transformers are designed for seamless integration into the mine’s existing infrastructure while adhering to strict environmental and safety standards. A primary focus of the project has been the adherence to a tight manufacturing schedule to ensure that the delivery aligns perfectly with the mine’s production targets. With the units now fully built, the team is completing final minor tasks in preparation for the Factory Acceptance Testing, ensuring that every component meets the necessary quality benchmarks before deployment.

While the manufacturing phase has proceeded without significant hitches, the logistics of transporting such heavy equipment to a remote site in Botswana present a unique set of challenges. To address this, LHM has implemented a robust supply chain protocol and is utilising its extensive local expertise to manage the upcoming delivery and installation. Proactive communication and a seasoned project management team remain at the forefront of their strategy to mitigate any potential delays, ensuring the project remains on track for its scheduled rollout in the coming weeks.

The installation of these transformers is set to provide a substantial boost to the mine’s operations by enhancing power reliability and significantly reducing the risk of costly downtime. Improved energy efficiency will also lead to lowered maintenance requirements and optimised performance, resulting in notable cost savings for the mining house. This project further reinforces LHM’s dedication to the SADC region, showcasing its ability to provide innovative and sustainable power solutions that drive industrial growth and foster enduring professional partnerships.

“Our deep understanding of the unique operational challenges within the mining industry further strengthened the client’s confidence in our solution, and we are proud to contribute to the growth and sustainability of the mining sector across the SADC region,” says Chris Thoka, Divisional Sales and Marketing Manager at LHM.
